What is a Sweat Lodge?
A sweat lodge ceremony is a traditional Indigenous ritual focused on purification, healing, and spiritual connection. Participants enter a small, enclosed structure—often made of natural materials—where heated stones are placed in a central pit. Water is poured over the stones to create steam, raising the temperature and humidity inside the lodge. The intense heat and steam promote physical sweating, which is believed to cleanse the body of toxins.
The ceremony is led by a guide or elder who facilitates prayers, songs, and meditation throughout the session, fostering a deep sense of reflection and community among participants. Sweat lodge ceremonies are considered sacred and serve as a space for mental, emotional, and spiritual renewal. They are traditionally practiced in many Native American cultures and can vary in structure and intention depending on the specific tribal customs.
